A new update brings an improved user interface to older Tesla vehicles . According to this report citing forum users, the v8.1 update (2018.12) improves the speed and capacity of S and X model vehicles equipped with a Nvidia Tegra 3 MCU. It was expected Musk said at the end of December 2017 that Tesla was working to improve the browser for all its vehicles.

Users have discovered that the browser speed is considerably faster, capable of downloading at an average of more than 5 Mbps. HTML5 capabilities have also been improved. This is just the latest in Tesla’s ongoing mission to improve its vehicles after customers buy them.

Tesla launched the Model S with the Tegra 3 SoC and used it until the end of 2017, when the company opted for new x86_64 microcontrollers. Last month, Elon Musk confirmed via Twitter that it was possible to upgrade older vehicles with new MCUs.

Although it is possible to upgrade older vehicles, it is better for the consumer, and probably for the company, to upgrade existing equipment rather than to bring in vehicles for a hardware upgrade.
